The original 1993 movie forever changed how we see movies—and glasses of water. Come revisit (or discover) the Spielberg movie that spawned a whole army of sequels. (See what we did there?) Then come back on Saturday, Nov. 17, for “Hold on to Your Butts,” the ingenious and hilarious live, two-person-plus-Foley-artist scene-for-scene recreation of the movie.

Ulrich is a regular performer in the DC improv scene featured in the troupes King Bee, Nox! and Jive Turkey. He studied improvisational comedy at the Uprights Citizens Brigade and The Magnet Theater in New York, Improv Olympic and Annoyance Theater in Chicago and Los Angeles, and the Washington Improv Theater and DC Improv in Washington.

This master class will explore collaboration, trust and being in the moment for improv performers. Participants will learn a number of games you can play just about anywhere, learn how to develop scenes, create characters within seconds, and learn exercises to help create "group mind" to better work and act together. Expect a high energy and active session! No improv experience is required, but it is designed for 9th-12th graders who are on an improv team, who are involved in theatre or are interested in improvisation.

Foley (or the creation of sound in film and on stage) is one of the most creative and fun ways to play with storytelling. In this workshop, families will explore the sounds we can make with our voices and with everyday objects to imitate sounds of the world. With a mix of demonstration, trial and error, and games, this hands-on workshop explores the ways Recent Cutbacks makes and use sound in their shows and how you can too! This class is designed for those 8 and up, and it is recommended that families participate together. Children under 14 must have a parent register with them.

It’s story time for Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh, but Pooh won’t hear just any story, he wants to hear a story about himself, because “he’s that sort of bear.” Pooh’s love of honey and his friendship with Piglet take him and the rest of the forest creatures, Owl, Eeyore and Rabbit, on a journey as they try to understand their new neighbors, Kanga and Roo. There is a reason this beloved story has become a classic for all ages—the themes are universal and the characters are silly, yet charming.

Youth actors will work with The Alden’s team of theatre professionals to bring this story to life with full sets, costumes and technical elements on The Alden’s stage.

Rehearsals: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7-9 p.m., from late January through mid-March

Performances: Saturdays and Sundays, March 9, 10, 16 and 17, 2 p.m., in The Alden

Who can audition: Students between the ages of 10-16 who live in the MCC Tax District

Additional rehearsals may be required if deemed necessary by the director and producer. Because theatre-making is a group activity, attendance at each rehearsal, tech rehearsal and performance is mandatory unless approved in advance by the producer.
