The McLean Project for the Arts is pleased to present week-long art workshops for children ages 6-8 and 8-11. All sessions are designed to be fun and creative! All materials are provided. Please bring a snack and a painting smock or an old oversized shirt. Parents and siblings are invited to an art show the last 20 minutes of class on Friday.

Kaleidoscope
Week 1, June 23-27
We will use beads, sequins and other materials to make a kaleidoscope and we’ll create a kaleidoscope of art all week long using a variety of materials and techniques. It will be a fun and creative week.

Wild Things!
Week 2, June 30-July 3
A week to explore real and imagined creatures and critters from the “wild.” We’ll use paint, colored pencils, markers, beads and other materials to create our own wild creatures from the ocean, the rainforest or wherever they might be found. Our imaginations will run wild!

Colorburst
Week 3, July 7-11
Get ready for a week of big, bold, beautiful color. We will learn about the fundamental principles of color as we explore a variety of media and processes to create colorful works of art! Drawing, painting and collage will be explored.

Me, Myself & I
Week 4, July 14-18
We will learn about the many styles of portraiture, and we’ll use a variety of materials to create portraits of ourselves, our family and friends, even our family pet! We’ll also create drawings, paintings and collages of real or imagined favorite places, activities, dreams—the sky’s the limit!

Modern Masters
Week 5, July 21-25
Pollack, Matisse, Picasso and more! We will study the work of a different master artist each day, learn about color usage, shape, texture and composition and create artwork influenced by the style of the featured artist.

Seeing the Natural World
Week 6, July 28-August 1
We will examine patterns, lines, colors and shapes in nature and use these ideas to create our own artwork. A variety of techniques will be used including collage, drawing and painting.

Tell Us a Story
Week 7, August 4-8
We will learn a fresh appreciation for how pictures tell stories by looking at illustrations, hearing stories and talking about how illustrations relate to words. We will use a variety of materials and techniques to create art that tells a story. Imagination and creativity will be encouraged.

Drawing, Painting & Making Things
Week 8, August 11-15
Children love to use drawing and painting to create innovative works of art. Basics such as line, form, perspective, and design and color theory are taught through fun and creative projects using an array of different materials and techniques.

Paper Creations
Week 1, June 23-27
We will explore the many ways paper can be used to create exciting and beautiful works of art. Papier-mache creations, origami, pop-up books and paper sculpture are some of the activities we will explore.

Drawing
Week 2, June 30-July 3
Children love to draw and want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. We’ll learn drawing fundamentals including perspective, proportion, form and shading through fun and creative projects. Pencils, pastels, charcoal and ink are among the media we’ll use.

Week 3, July 7-11
We will use pastels, watercolors and acrylics to explore the fundamentals of color, including color mixing, color relationships and the psychology of color. We’ll be encouraged to boldly experiment with color in our artwork.

We will look very closely at natural materials and discover extraordinary abstract patterns and shapes. Inspired by these beautiful abstract forms, we will use a variety of materials including charcoal, pastels, paint and collage to create our own abstract artworks.

Flip Out!
Week 7, August 4-8
A week of animation, flip books, cartoons and comics! Bring your imaginations and any special characters you have developed. We will review the history of animation and storyboarding, learn new techniques and use a variety of materials to develop and present our ideas in exciting new forms.

3-D Art Adventures
Week 8, August 11-15
We’ll explore the unlimited possibilities of working in three dimensions. Using both a variety of materials and an experimental approach, we will study shape, color, texture and form. Projects may include sketches and studies, shadow boxes, 3-D creatures and clay sculpture.
