The Ronald McDonald Houses provide a Home-Away-from-Home for families of seriously ill children being treated at local hospitals. Their houses offer guest rooms, kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, computer work stations, play areas, TV rooms, and laundry facilities. Outside, families may enjoy playgrounds, gardens, and walking paths. Each House is staffed daily by volunteers and staff who provide families with 24-hour assistance. (http://rmhc.org).
The teens will lend a helping hand by cleaning their facility.
March 16
Food For Others (www.foodforothers.org) “is the largest distributor of free food directly to people in need in Northern Virginia, provides the assistance vitally needed by our unemployed and low-income neighbors. We provide a safety net for people who suddenly face unforeseen emergencies such as a family illness or the loss of a job or a spouse.
Even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, we still face a poverty rate of about 5%. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30 percent are children. “
To help, we will pack boxes of food for needy families, restock the shelves, etc. We'll work inside a warehouse, but it will be the same temperature inside as it is outside. Participants need to dress appropriately for the weather and MUST wear closed-toe shoes.
