MEET THE CANDIDATES

Adult Candidates—Four Positions Open

Neal

Neal M. Callander
Greetings! I have a lifelong love of the arts, a background in education and management and a strong interest in community service. I am a proud stay-at-home parent who manages affairs for my wife, J.D. Callander, and our three children. I am and ESOL instructor, a church junior warden/outreach coordinator, a Scout leader and the business manager for J.D.’s real estate practice. Music is my special interest. I collect classical, avant garde, world and “roots” music and regularly attend performances.

Neal

Lee DiCenso
As a board member of McLean Project for the Arts since 2002, I have served as chairperson of the programming committee and treasurer. MPA operates in partnership with the McLean Community Center. I am familiar with MCC through MPA, and as a participant in its events and programs. On the Governing Board, I will work to ensure that MCC and its facilities are equipped to continue and improve their programs and events to serve the broadest possible spectrum of citizens.

Neal

Sean A. Dunn
McLean Community Center is a valuable community resource of which we should all be proud. As Governing Board chairman for the last two years, I have worked with the County to formalize absentee ballots, discussed a possible downtown presence, explored options for an MCC gym at Spring Hill and supported MPA’s Artfest. I’ve worked with MCC staff and fellow board members to control expenses and improve budget oversight. If re-elected, I hope we can repeat the recent tax rate reduction.

Neal

Michael J. Kelly
I wish to serve on this board to expand community involvement and lower its cost to Small District One citizens. I am a retiree from the Commerce Department and previously served on the board of Opportunities Unlimited, a non-profit that placed qualified mentally impaired in to the Washington workforce. Through the Mothers’ Day Out program, we made friends whose children’s weddings we now attend. I think the Center must refocus to consider the costs of its programs to young families.

Neal

Risa E. Sanders, Ph.D.
The MCC is the jewel of McLean. I am a retired clinical psychologist, a former PTA president and a community volunteer. I am married and the mom of a 7th grader. My family has taken advantage of nearly every type of programming the Center has to offer over our 12 years here. I will work to expand performing arts opportunities, enhance programming across the lifespan, augment opportunities for teens and be responsive to community needs. Thank you for your vote!

Neal

Lori Wertz
I would be honored to serve on the MCC Board. As a 19-year resident of Small District One, my family and I have volunteered at Alden Theatre and attended activities from playgroup days to present. I attend the meetings, and I’m aware of some issues that we’ll face.  As a local real estate professional, I have experience with residents, their values and property. I offer my integrity, energy and desire to keep McLean one of the best places to live!

Youth Candidates—Two Positions Open

Mclean High School area

Neal

Eve Cox
I have a passion for all the arts and the MCC provides splendid opportunities for all ages to enjoy and participate in a variety of performing and fine arts. I want to support and enrich these activities in any way I can because of the beauty they bring to our lives. I first performed at Alden at age 8, and 22 shows later, I want to encourage and help other people realize their dreams through MCC the way I have.

Neal

Jennifer Dunn
I’m a sophomore at McLean High School (MHS) who has regularly enjoyed McLean Community Center events and Alden Theatre productions, as well as attending some of the classes offered by the Center. Now, I would like to take the next step and represent the interests of my peers from MHS and surrounding schools as a student member of the Governing Board. In particular, I’d like to preserve and enhance the Teen Center programming that many of us enjoyed as middle-schoolers.

Langley High School area

Neal

Matthew L. Evans
I have attended the Old Firehouse Teen Center both as a member and for after school programs. It is an important part of the MCC and I want to serve on the Governing Board to ensure its continued growth and evolution. I believe there needs to be more involvement by high school students in the Center, but first we need programs that will attract them. That will be my focus. I hope you will vote for me on McLean Day.

Neal

Thomas Meyer
I am Thomas Meyer, a junior at Gonzaga College High School and I am the oldest of three children. Previously, I attended Churchill Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary schools. I have actively participated in Alden Theatre at MCC productions, Boy Scouts and McLean Youth Sports for more than nine years in McLean. I just finished serving a semester as Senator John Warner’s page on Capitol Hill and I want to bring that capability and energy to the McLean Community Center.

Neal

Kayla Phillips
Ideas plus action achieve results. MCC functions are oriented towards youngsters and adults. I want to add fun programs specifically for those of us in high school. My responsibility will include soliciting your input. You will recognize me as the vertically challenged member of Langley High’s Varsity Dance Team. I maintain a 3.8 GPA (that last .2 sacrificed to allow some fun in high school). Let’s work together in making the MCC our resource and a fun place for us.

For more information, call the Center at 703-790-0123/TTY: 711.
