New! Splendors of the Hudson River Valley
October 15–17, 2008
Join the McLean Travelers for three days of exploring homes, gardens and landscapes in the Hudson River Valley of New York. The trip begins with a tour of Lyndhurst, one of America’s finest Gothic revival mansions with 19thcentury landscapes. There will be a catered lunch at the Carriage House on the estate.
After the tour and luncheon, we will check in to the Marriott Springhill Suites, Tarrytown, for two nights. On Thursday morning, we will tour Boscobel, an elegant mansion located high above the Hudson River in the highlands. Boscobel features a collection of decorative arts from the Federal period, high-style furniture by Duncan Phyfe and displays of English china, silver and glass. We will eat lunch at the historic Hudson House, located in the artfilled town of Cold Spring. Next, we will tour Sunnyside, the home of author Washington Irving. This romantic, fully restored Dutch Colonial cottage features gardens and footpaths to the Hudson River. Finally, the day will end at the Union Church at Pocantico Hills. Built with John D. Rockefeller’s donated funds, the church displays famous stained-glass windows by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall.
We will dine at Harvest on Hudson, a turn-of-the-century converted river warehouse overlooking the Palisades. On Friday morning, we will visit Kykuit, the magnificent Renaissance-style home of three generations of Rockefellers, which features views of the Hudson River and landscaped gardens. After the guided tour, a boxed lunch will be provided for you to enjoy while we travel home.
