Abrakadoodle® Art Classes for Children
This popular series of imaginative art classes for children is based on the learning principles of Jean Piaget. Children create wonderful “masterpieces” using innovative art materials, while exploring artistic styles and techniques. Each series of lessons offers unique experiences designed to foster creativity.

Twoosy Doodlers
This is a special art class just for toddlers and their parents (or helpers). Little fingers will experiment with painting, gluing, sticking, printing and creating while developing fine motor, language and self-help skills. This is an “I can do it” class that is fun and creative. Each session has new activities, and parents and helpers get to play, too. Instructor: Abrakadoodle Staff.

Mini Doodlers

Spring Break Camp: Buzz, Ribbit and Roar with Abrakadoodle
Let’s get into nature with fish, frogs, bugs, turtles and more! Create your own wild and wacky world with these fun lessons while learning about a variety of artists and art media. Children must be fully potty trained. Please remember to send a snack and drink each day (NO nuts, please). Abrakadoodle staff.

Color Your WorldColored pencils
Children will study how color has been used as a means of expression by artists such as Monet, Gauguin, Matisse and others. Using a variety of painting and drawing materials, students will create their own colorful works of art. Instructor: Anthony Brock.

A Thousand Points of Color
Children will learn the techniques of pointillism, a painting style invented by French artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. The color interactions in your child’s paintings will surprise and amaze you. Instructor: Anthony Brock.

Creative Art Studio
Young artists are introduced to art concepts such as perspective, line, form and color theory through creative—and fun!—two- and three-dimensional projects. Masks!
Who’s behind that mask? Anyone who wears it! Children will study the cultural, ritual and spiritual masks of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Using paper, papier mâché and modeling compound, children will create masks in the different styles of these cultures from around the world. Instructor: Ellen Face.

Art, It’s What’s for Dinner
Calling all food lovers! Children will study the works of renowned artists famous for depicting food in their art. Artists and themes of their work include Cézanne’s apple paintings, Renoir’s paintings of leisurely lunches, Lichtenstein’s comic world of food, Wayne Thiebaud’s painted confections in bakery windows and Claes Oldenburg’s series of vinyl ice cream cones.

Me, Myself & I
We will learn about the many styles of portraiture and use a variety of materials to create portraits of ourselves, our family and friends, even our family pet! Drawing: Capturing AnimalsIllustration of a german shepard
Does your child love animals? If so, this is the perfect class for him or her! Picture a roaring lion, a sprinting cheetah, a smiling crocodile, a galloping horse or a snuggly puppy. Students will learn to draw realistic images like these by studying anatomy, gesture, proportion and drawing techniques including contour lines, sketching, smooth shading, cross hatching and highlighting. Materials include colored pencil, marker, pencil, charcoal and oil pastel. Students will have the opportunity to draw animals of their own interest as well as a variety of animals that may include birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and other underwater creatures. Painting Fundamentals
Students will explore various styles of art from modernism, contemporary and world art. Representational art, Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism and Abstraction are just some of the styles that will be examined in this class. Painting techniques, composition, formalism, content and color theory will be emphasized to provide students with a general understanding of the fundamentals of painting. Instructor: Ellen Face.

Claymation
Explore the techniques of claymation. Children will create story boards, sculpt original characters with animation clay, and build sets to create short, animated videos. At the final session, each student will receive a DVD of their claymations.

Drawing into Painting
Students will learn the process of painting by beginning with drawing techniques that lead to a stronger painting. Students begin with composition studies, line drawings and tonal studies, then learn strategies for transferring the drawing onto a canvas and making the finished painting. This class covers the fundamentals of drawing and painting and includes discussion about canvas preparation and painting materials. Instructor: Erik Swanson.

A Little Bit of Everything: An Introduction to Classical Fine Art Practices
This course is for the student who wishes to diversify his or her classical portfolio in subject matter as well as media. Lessons will include: figure drawing with clothed models (pencil, charcoal); still life drawing (pencil, charcoal, soft pastel); landscape (oil painting); translating sketchbook drawings into prints (block printing); and small figure sculpture (sculpey, oven cured clay). Instructor: Rula Jones.

13-18 years

Introduction to Digital PhotographyYoung woman with a digital camera
In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how their digital cameras work and how to improve the technical and artistic aspects of their photographs. Fundamental concepts of photography such as composition, light and motion will be covered. We will work indoors and out, take still life photographs in available light and under studio hot lights, and experiment with portraits. Students will take two to four of their strongest images to be printed offsite before they will be displayed and discussed at the final class.

Family Art Workshops
We’ll meet in the gallery for a short tour of MPA’s current exhibition and then you and your child will create a one-of-a-kind artwork to take home.

Cool Constructions
Using both two- and three-dimensional space, we will construct colorful geometric sculptures from found objects, geometric patterns and paint. Materials include wood, paint, cardboard and recycled plastic bottles and any other materials you choose to bring to recycle. We will be inspired by the multi-dimensional sculptures of Eric Garner in the gallery. Instructor: Sharon Fishel

Animal Scratchboard Drawings
Do you love animals? Bring storybooks with your favorite animal characters. After looking at books and viewing the art in the Youth Art Show, you will create wonderful scratchboard drawings of animals. What would your favorite miniature fantasy landscape be like? Using mixed media materials including recycled objects, dried plants, sticks, paint, shells and other textural surfaces and patterns, you will create a fantasy landscape inside and outside your box that tells your own unique invented story.
