ABRAKADOODLE®
This popular series of imaginative art classes for children is based on the learning principles of Jean Piaget. Children create wonderful “masterpieces” using innovative art materials, while exploring artistic styles and techniques. Each series of lessons offers unique experiences designed to foster creativity.

Twoosy Doodlers
For ages 20-36 months. This is a special art class just for toddlers and parents (or helpers). Little fingers will experiment with painting, gluing, sticking, printing and creating while developing fine motor, language and self-help skills. This is an “I can do it” class that is fun and creative. Each session has new activities, and moms and helpers get to play too. Instructor: Abrakadoodle Staff

Mini Doodlers
For ages 3-6. Children develop their creativity through carefully designed lessons that ignite the imagination and develop skills.
Using real artists’ materials including watercolors, tempera paints, oil pastels, creative tools and more, children create masterpieces that are truly unique. Instructor: Abrakadoodle Staff

Drawing, Painting & Making Things
In this fun and creative class, children will develop their imaginations and discover a variety of materials and their uses
while using drawing and painting techniques to create two- and three-dimensional works of art. Students may register for either or both sessions. Instructor: Anthony Brock

Family Art Workshops
We’ll meet in the gallery for a short tour of the exhibition, and then you and your child will create a one-of-a-kind artwork to take home.

New! All about You
Using maps, colorful papers, words, photographs, glitter, colored sand and other textured media, we will create dynamic collages that tell the story of your family and your own neighborhood. Bring in photos or drawings of your house, car, family and neighbors. We will meet in the gallery and be inspired by the work of Richmond artist Jeremy Drummond.

Color your World
Children will learn how artists such as Turner, Cézanne and Monet have used color as a means of expression. We will create colorful works of art using a variety of painting and drawing material. Instructor: Natalia Malley

Fabulous Fables
Children will discover how fables change over time and from one part of the world to another. We will create paintings and collages that illustrate modern versions of our favorite fables. Instructor: Natalia Malley

Flip It!
Flip books, cartoons and comics! Bring your imaginations and any special characters you have developed. We will review the history of animation and storyboarding, learn new techniques and use a variety of materials to develop and present or ideas in exciting new forms. Parents may wish to take their children to the Corcoran Gallery of Art to see the beginnings of motion graphics in the special exhibition Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change where they will observe animals in action and acrobats in mid-air. Color Theory
Students learn how to use color to achieve subtle and striking effects. After learning about the color wheel, value, intensity and contrast, students discover ways in which color interaction can embolden their work. Instructor: Erik Swanson

Drawing Into Painting
This class is designed for students with some drawing experience who wish to explore painting. Students move from graphite to colored pencil to acrylic paint, translating their drawings on paper into paintings on canvas. Genres include still life, landscape and portraiture. Returning students continue to advance their drawing and painting skills. Instructor: Michael Cantwell

Capturing Motion: Painting
In the tradition of Degas and Calder, students learn to capture the movements of dancers, athletes and acrobats using watercolor and acrylic paint. This class will focus on techniques using color and textural effects. Instructor: Rula Jones

The Artist’s Book
This class is for the teenager who is compelled by both the visual and written word. Students will explore several forms of
creative writing including flash fiction, haiku and free verse, and then incorporate their written works with various bookbinding techniques. Fine art techniques such as block printing, photographic collage and illumination will be used. Instructor: Rula Jones
