ABRAKADOODLE®
This popular series of imaginative art classes for children is based on the learning principles of Jean Piaget. Children create wonderful “masterpieces” using innovative art materials, while exploring artistic styles and techniques. Each series of lessons offers unique experiences designed to foster creativity.

Twoosy Doodlers
For ages 20-36 months. This is a special art class just for toddlers and parents (or helpers). Little fingers will experiment with painting, gluing, sticking, printing and creating while developing fine-motor, language and self-help skills. This is an “I can do it” class that is fun and creative. Each session has new activities, and moms and helpers get to play too.

Mini Doodlers

Doodlers
For 1st –3rd-graders. Children create their own unique masterpieces through painting, drawing and exploring creative materials. Each lesson introduces children to new techniques and artists’ styles. Holiday Card Workshop
For preschoolers–6th graders. During this special workshop, children will create an original design that will be reproduced for use on holiday greeting cards. Each session incorporates the child’s original artwork with an Abrakadoodle 2008 design to create a unique holiday card.Workshop includes 10 greeting cards (to be received in November). Information about ordering additional cards will be available at the workshop. Children will be grouped by age. Class enrollment is limited to 20 participants.

Splat Workshop
For ages 3-12. Drop off the kids for a creatively charged workshop with Splat, Abrakadoodle’s Arty Dog.While you accomplish your holiday errands, the children will design a unique holiday surprise of their own, all while learning the concepts of printing, shape discovery and the elements of dot, line and color. Children will be grouped by age. A snack and drink will be provided.

Many Ways to Create Art
For ages 3-6. Sculpture, painting and collage are just a few ways to create magnificent artwork. Use a variety of materials and techniques while learning about famous artists and world cultures. Materials fee includes all props, games, stories and music used in class. Children must bring a snack each day (please avoid sending foods that contain peanuts). Children must be potty trained.

Family Art Workshops
We’ll all meet in the gallery for a short tour of the exhibition, and then you and your children will create one-of-a kind artwork to take home.

Family Workshop: Mindscapes
For age 4-8. Create colorful worlds using pastels, charcoal and cutout shapes of animals, flowers, words—whatever your mind conjures up to tell a story.We’ll look at the paintings and drawings by Jo Smail in the gallery for inspiration.

Family Workshop: Wacky Machine Scuptures
For ages 4-8. Make your own wacky machine sculpture using nuts, bolts, wood, wire, springs and paint. Tour the galleries to view the exhibitions for ideas before creating your own unique contraption.

Drawing, Painting & Making Things

Story Art: Parent-Child Workshop
For ages 3-5. See the world through your child’s eyes! In this workshop, you’ll play together with other parents and children, creating art inspired by popular fairy tales and fables. Each week, you and your child will listen to a new story and work together on a project in paper, watercolor, clay, or felt and fabric. Back home, on your refrigerator or kitchen table, these works of art will remind you of your travels in the magical land of stories.

Cartooning and Claymation
For ages 8-12. After learning the basic conventions of cartooning, students will take their skills to the next level as they explore techniques of claymation. Students will create story boards, sculpt original characters with animation clay, build sets and work in groups to create short, animated videos. Students will receive a DVD copy of their claymations.

Pencils to Paint
For ages 8-12. This class is designed for students with some drawing experience who wish to explore painting. Students move from graphite to colored pencil to acrylic paint, translating their drawings on paper into paintings on canvas. Genres include still life, landscape and portraiture. Returning students continue to advance their drawing and painting skills.

For ages 9-12. Students will learn the basics of painting including brush handling and care, paint mixing and palette organization. Working from observation and with a variety of paints, students will gain an understanding of painting’s technical and expressive possibilities. This course will cover elements of color theory and composition, using examples from the history of painting.

Junior Studio
For ages 9-12. Students will work in many media, in the studio and outdoors, to explore and develop drawing and painting skills. Work may be done in charcoal, pastels, pencil and acrylics on canvas. Junior Studio is recommended for students who wish to consider the possibilities of further studies in art. This class is offered on a continuous basis, with individual projects for more advanced students.

New! Capturing Motion: Drawing
For ages 12-16. In the tradition of Degas, Bellows and Calder, students will learn to capture the movements of dancers, athletes and acrobats in two-dimensional works. Observing clothed models, students will use graphite, ink and pastels to express the sense of life, gesture and action. Although no prior figure-drawing experience is required, the class is designed to challenge more advanced students.

Artistic Expressions
For ages 12-16. For students who want to take their art to the next level. This class explores techniques, methods and goals of artistic expression. Students will learn to think and act like artists by creating their own concepts while incorporating themes such as the self, memory and pop culture into coherent artworks. Using a variety of drawing and painting materials, students will complete projects that reflect their individual artistic objectives.
