Dumbarton Oaks

Join MPA for a visit to Dumbarton Oaks, an impressive 19th-century, Federal-style mansion, museum and gardens. The property, previously owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss, contains large and important collections of artifacts and books. The owners donated the property and collections to Harvard University in 1940, and in 1944 the mansion became the site of the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, laying the  roundwork for the creation of the United Nations. On the guided tour, we will view extraordinary examples of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art in the recently renovated galleries and European masterpieces in the historic Music Room. We will visit the gardens if time permits, so please wear comfortable shoes. Lunch at Bistrot Lepic included.

Washington National Cathedral Tea & Needlepoint Tour

TheWashington National Cathedral features more than 1,500 pieces of needlework portraying historic Americans, floral patterns, baby animals and many other subjects. This docent-led tour reveals how these exquisite treasures of needlepoint convey messages throughout the cathedral. Following the needlepoint tour, we will enjoy tea in the Cathedral, taking in the panoramic views of the city. After tea, you can wander and visit the gardens or shops. Before the tour, we will hear an organ recital in the Cathedral.

Maryland’s Early Beginnings St. Mary’s City
Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008
Join us for a fascinating fall day as we step back in to the past in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Our day begins in historic St. Mary’s City, where our knowledgeable guide will take us to the reconstructed State House of 1676. Then, we’ll explore the earliest ship that sailed in to Maryland, the Maryland Dove. St. Mary’s City, the first capital of Maryland, is recognized as one of America’s best-preserved archeological sites and a National Historic Landmark.

Lunch will be served at the charming 19thcentury, Brome-Howard Inn on the St. Mary’s River. In the afternoon, we will visit Sotterley Plantation and have a guided tour of this unique 1717 colonial mansion with a pirate’s secret passage. The view of the Patuxent River from the veranda at Sotterley is truly beautiful. This trip promises to be a wonderful adventure in to the past and a chance to view some spectacular fall foliage. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
