McLean Project for the Arts' Summer Art Camp
Fun, creative, week-long sessions for children ages 6-8 and 8-11 at the McLean Community Center. Rising 3rd-graders may choose mornings or afternoons. Tuition is $150 per week/$135 McLean district residents; tuition for week 2 is $125/$110 McLean district residents. All materials are provided. Please bring a snack and a painting smock or old oversized shirt. Parents and siblings are invited to an art show to be held during the last 20 minutes of class each Friday.

Week 1, June 28-July 2
Colorfields

Do you love to paint? We will drip and draw onto paper and canvas with colorful layers of paint, oil pastel and collage, creating beautiful fields of color and texture. We’ll learn about Jackson Pollock, Morris Louis and other 20th-century artists as we create our own colorful artworks.
Week 2, July 6-9
Animals in Art

We will draw and paint animals—real and imaginary—all week! Line, form, perspective, anatomy, motion, shading and other techniques will be explored as we create artworks featuring favorite animals.
Week 3, July 12-16
Kaleidoscope of Art

We will use beads, sequins, feathers, paint, special papers and other materials to make one-of-a-kind sculptures and collages—a kaleidoscope of bold, colorful art projects. We’ll have a fun and creative week with an emphasis on stretching our imaginations while learning about color, composition and problem solving.
Week 4, July 19-23
Under the Sea

Are you going to the beach this summer? This week we’ll explore some of the beautiful, exotic and sometimes scary creatures that live in the sea—colorful corals and tropical fish, dolphins, octopuses and sharks—and we’ll create our own sea creatures using paint, colored pencils, markers, paper collage and clay. A fun week of exploration, imagination and creation!

Art Through Time

Take a quick trip through art history as we learn about the development of art, from early cave painting and ancient Egyptian art, all the way to the present, and create artwork in the styles we explore using charcoal, crayon, pastel, pencil, markers and paint.
Week 6, August 2-6

Modern Masters

Matisse, Picasso, Calder and more! We will study the work of a different master artist each day, learn about color usage, shape, texture and composition, and create artwork influenced by the style of the featured artists.
Week 7, August 9-13
Me, Myself & I

We will learn about the many styles of portraiture and use a variety of materials to create portraits of ourselves, our family and friends, even our family pet! We’ll also create drawings, paintings and collages of real or imagined favorite places, activities, dreams—the sky’s the limit!

Week 1, June 28-July 2
3-D Art Adventures

We’ll explore the unlimited possibilities of working in three dimensions. Using both a variety of materials and an experimental approach, we will study shape, color, texture and form. Projects may include sketches and studies, shadow boxes, 3-D creatures and clay sculpture.
Week 2, July 6-9
Drawing

Children love to draw and want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. We will learn drawing fundamentals including perspective, proportion, form and shading through fun and creative projects. Pencils, pastels, charcoal and ink are among the media we’ll use.
Week 3, July 12-16
Drawing & Painting with Color

We will use pastels, watercolors and acrylics to explore the fundamentals of color, including color mixing, color relationships and the psychology of color. We’ll be encouraged to boldly experiment with color in our artwork.
Week 4, July 19-23
Flip Out!

A week of cartooning, flip books and comics! Bring your imaginations and any special characters you have developed. We will review the history of animation and storyboarding, learn new techniques and use a variety of materials to develop and present our ideas in exciting new forms.
Week 5, July 26-30
Claymation

Explore the techniques of Claymation. Create story boards, sculpt original characters with animation clay, build sets and work in groups to create short, animated videos. At the final session each student will receive a DVD of their claymations.
Week 6, August 2-6

Abstracting from Nature

We will look very closely at natural materials and discover extraordinary abstract patterns and shapes. Inspired by these beautiful abstract forms, we will use a variety of materials including charcoal, pastels, paint and collage to create our own artworks.
