Jewelry Boot Camp for Beginner Teens & Adults
Learn the essentials of jewelry making and design. This is an introductory, hands-on workshop in the construction of necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Through the completion of three simple projects, students will learn the techniques to use stringing wire, elastic, findings and tools and how to decide the best options for your projects. Tools are available for use in class. Instructor: Kathryn Lagassey.

The Art of the Book
Take your scrapbooking to a higher level by learning the fundamentals of fine art book making. Learn briefly about the history of book making and its role in the contemporary art scene and explore on an introductory level block printing, Japanese accordion binding, text illumination, collage and free-form binding. Students will have completed at least one book by the end of the course. All levels welcome. Instructor: Rula Jones.

For both beginners and experienced students seeking to improve their skills, this course emphasizes gesture, line, proportion, perspective, mass, volume, value, tone and shading. Working with conté crayon, graphite, pen and ink wash and an assortment of papers, students will study the figure, still life and subjects of individual choice. Students are provided with a strong foundation for more advanced classes. Instructor: Kristin Enck.

Figure Drawing
For all skill levels. This course focuses on drawing from live models, working primarily with black and white materials. Students will learn how to capture the pose with quick gestures, to develop a quality of line with contours and to become familiar with proportions by measuring and foreshortening. Short drills lead to long poses and the development of more complete, detailed drawings of the human form. Instructor: Raye Leith.

Continuing Drawing

Drawing into Painting
For all skill levels. This course teaches the process of painting, beginning with drawing techniques that lead to a stronger painting. Students begin with composition studies, line drawings and tonal studies, then learn strategies for transferring the drawing onto a canvas and making the finished painting. This class covers the fundamentals of drawing and painting and includes discussion about canvas preparation and painting materials. Instructor: Erik Swanson.

Abstract Painting
No painting or drawing experience is required. This course explores the concepts and meanings of abstraction and their relevance in today’s world. Students will draw on imagery from nature and the visible world, personal experience, ideas, dreams and the history of abstract painting. Instructor: Marise Riddell.

PaintbrushesPainting: Intermediate/Advanced
Students will review the fundamentals of painting through the process of direct observation, progress on an individual basis and explore personal vision with the guidance of the instructor. Using criteria developed by each person’s vision, students will experiment with color, composition and self-expression. Bring your painting supplies and a canvas (no smaller than 16” x 20”) to the first class. Instructor: Julie Lansaw.

Beginning Watercolor
This is an introduction to the basics of color mixing, brush techniques, value and composition. The importance of materials in watercolor will be stressed. Continuing Watercolor
For students who have completed a beginning watercolor class. Working from still life, live models and the landscape, students will explore a variety of subjects and styles with an emphasis on developing one’s personal style. Techniques such as wet into wet, drybrush and glazing will be explored with particular emphasis on color and composition. Instructor: Barbara Januszkiewicz.

Drawing Workshop: Pen with Black & Colored Ink
For all skill levels. Using pen and brush, students will experience the properties and possibilities of black and colored ink. Subject matter includes calligraphy, landscape and portraiture, with reference to works by European and Asian artists of the past as well as contemporary masters. By the end of the class, students will begin to develop an individualized approach to the medium. Instructor: Marise Riddell.

Drawing Workshop: Charcoal
For all skill levels. Explore the versatility, fluidity, texture and power of this medium, which was favored by Leonardo and Michelangelo. Students create sketches as well as finished drawings from still life and the model. Topics include the different effects of charcoal pencils and charcoal sticks on tinted and textured paper, value or chiaroscuro, balance, dramatic contrast and proper handling and preservation of work. Drawing Workshop: The Figure in Color
In this short course, students will: learn the use of color in the interpretation of the figure; develop an understanding of color’s theoretical and intuitive uses by applying chalk pastel, oil pastel and colored pencil; practice the classical/representational and expressive/contemporary approaches. This course provides a good transition from figure drawing to figure painting. Previous figure drawing experience is highly recommended. Instructor: TBA.

Drawing Workshop: Pastels
For beginning and intermediate pastel artists; previous drawing experience is recommended. Students will work from still life and the figure using this beautiful, versatile medium. Analyzing the work of artists who have used pastels to capture light, students will uncover ideas that may be applied to their own work. Painting Toward Abstraction
This short course seeks to answer the question, “How does a painter move from realism to abstraction?” Many artists begin by painting what they see, but over time switch to painting more abstractly. Students will explore this process of developing a painterly language evolving from depiction and toward abstraction. A series of painting projects will help students loosen the hold on literalness and discover new ways to evoke feeling. Instructor: Marise Riddell.

Painting: Art in a Series
In this short course, intermediate and advanced students refine their painting skills while developing focus and organizing their efforts toward a coherent artistic vision. Students come to class with a variety of life skills. Beginning with a chain of small experimental pieces that require traditional and non-traditional materials, they explore how these talents can intersect with artistic concerns to create new and meaningful work. Through visual and written exercises, students identify core themes in their work that can provide a foundation for a series of paintings. Instructor: TBA.

Plein-Air Landscape Painting
Following in the footsteps of Monet, Hassam and others who painted en plein air (meaning “in the open air”) and focusing on painting the landscape, students will learn how to work effectively outdoors and how to adjust and develop paintings when back in the studio. Students may work in oil, acrylic or watercolor. Class will be held indoors during inclement weather. Instructor: Erik Swanson.

Mixed Media Painting
For all skill levels. In this short course students will explore the formal and expressive aspects of painting through projects that involve a variety of media and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on mixing dry media (pencil, charcoal, pastel) and wet media (acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink) in order to learn to recognize and interpret relationships between line, tone and color as they appear in still life and portraits.
