Saturday, Dec. 2, 6:45 a.m.-8 p.m.

What could be more fun in December than peeking into the gracious homes of Lewes, Deleware, specifically on display for the holidays?

The people of Lewes pride themselves on tradition and historic preservation and it truly shows in their decorating skills. For Christmas 2017, the 44th Annual Christmas Tour of Lewes, sponsored by the Lewes Historical Society, will be a self-guided tour of both public and private homes. There will be a Christmas Market as well as an Artists of Lewes Gallery open house. Every year, the proud owners of the homes show off their eclectic decorations with their artwork and family heirlooms. Some houses date back to the early 18th century, others have been forwarded into the 21st century with creative additions.

Lunch will be on your own so that everyone will have enough time to see the houses and have a chance to shop the shops. There are several inviting restaurants in the town itself and a box dinner will be provided for the ride back to Virginia.

Holiday tours are always popular, so sign up early for this festive day filled with history and holiday cheer.

Online registration is not available for tours and day trips. Please contact the registrar at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, for registration options.

This special exhibit combines 65 works of art by Vermeer and his fellow painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Background will be given on Vermeer, his life and style of painting in 17th Century Dutch society. Despite not having any formal training in the art world, his attention to detail and color has made him one of the great masters in the art world.

Lunch will be on your own and is offered at either the Cascades Café or the Garden Café in the National Gallery of Art. Both serve delicious salads, sandwiches and specialty entrees.

Think spring and come along with us to visit the 2018 Philadelphia Flower Show, where scents, sounds and extraordinary floral displays will delight our senses. The theme this year is “Wonders of Water,” which will be so much more than just waterfalls and fountains. This year, the design teams will stretch the imagination and bring creativity to a whole new level by incorporating water into more than 10 acres of landscapes and fanciful aquatic blooms.

Lunch will be on your own. You can sample from the plentiful food vendors at the Convention Center or those located across the street at the historic Reading Terminal Market where the vast selections range from the iconic Philly Cheese Steaks to homebaked Amish goodies.

As in years past, garden shoppers will be thrilled with the over 180 vendors offering everything from garden furniture to unique plants and flowers. Horticulture, artistic and culinary lectures and demonstrations by world-class experts are all free to show visitors.

Sign up early! This day trip fills up quickly.PHS2017
